The superfoods you really (don't) need in your diet

It is such an attractive idea that some foods are healthy, some are unhealthy and some are superhealthy.

Why change your habits, when you can fix them by adding chia seeds?
Why settle for plain and boring good health, when kale will make you superhealthy?

'Superfoods' aren't magic. It's a marketing term and it's been used to create an industry worth billions. The term 'superfood' has no regulations or legal definitions as to what can and cannot hold the label.

Avocados won't cure heart disease.
Though, they are packed full of fibre and a great source of natural fats.

Goji berries can't cure cancer.
High in antioxidants, yes. Just like any other berry.
Your body has its own antioxidant defenses to keep free radicals in check and you don't need to consume large quantities of over priced shrivelled Himalayan berry to give it a helping hand.

Kale isn't the king of leafy greens.
Spinach, romain, parsley and chard actually pack more nutrients.

Apple Cider Vinegar won't make you lose weight.
It will probably just make you feel slightly queasy because it tastes absolutely morbid.

Want the unappealing truth?

Nutrition is complex. It's different for everyone and it's all a bit of a dark cloud of unknown.
We know that if you eat a balanced diet and do regular exercise, nothing is a superfood.
And if you don't? Well, Superfood Sandra can't save you.
