Here's how to stop overthinking EVERYTHING
Hands up if you're an overthinker.
Me too.
You know, like earlier when you walked past a stranger in the street and they looked at you for a split second longer than you wanted. Did you have something on your face?
Or, that full stop in your boss' email earlier must've signified that she was angry at you.
Maybe when your friend said that your dress was nice, she actually meant it was hideous.
What if they were just being nice because they felt sorry for you?
Is this the 7th or 8th time you've replayed the conversation with the shop assistant in your head today?
Let's stop this. It's not fun spending every minute of every waking day worrying, ruminating, escalating, dramatising situations to be so much more than they are.
Here's 3 tips to help stop the cycle:
1. Build awareness
You can't stop something from happening if you're on autopilot. Start by journalling at the end of each day. Over time, you'll gain more awareness of your thoughts, patterns and behaviours. Becoming aware is the first step to changing the behaviour.
2. Become present
Bring your attention to the current moment. When you're overthinking, you're either thinking about the past or present. Use mindfulness to choose where you put your attention. A great one is get in touch with your sense. What can you see? What can you smell? Taste? Hear? Feel?
3. Balance
When we're overthinking, our thoughts are usually negative (not to mention extreme af). Use a positive affirmation to balance the thought out. Over time, our brain will get used to this and will choose the positive thought, that makes us feel good, over the negative one.
Maybe the lady in the street was admiring your hair colour? Or, just minding her own business, in her own world, lost in her trail of over thinking and didn't even notice you?
It sounds brutal (and reassuring at the same time) but no one cares about your life as much as you do.
We are all too busy caring about ourselves to notice the leaf in your hair. I'm too busy worrying about the way my dress looks. You're too busy worrying about having something in your hair to notice my hideous dress.
