I bet you don't know this about confidence

I get asked a lot of questions about how to be more confident, or how to appear confident. But I think its important to address the myths surrounding confidence because it's not as simple as confident people make it seem.

(fun drinking game: take a shot every time I say confident or confidence)

People often think that:

1. If you are confident, you are not scared
2. You're either born confident, or not
3. Confidence will come naturally over time

But, I'd say that these are myths. Here's why:

1. Confidence is not the absence of fear. It is the willingness to take fear along for the ride and try anyway. It's knowing and being comfortable with knowing that you may succeed or fail. It's trusting that the actions are in line with your own personal values. It's trusting yourself, your ability and speaking to yourself with words of celebration and encouragement.

2. We cannot be born confident. It is actively learnt through parents, care givers and those we surround ourselves with. This is usually learnt during our early years, but it's not impossible to learn as an adult.

3. You'll be disappointed if you sit waiting for confidence to come to you. Confidence does not come before action. The action comes first, then the confidence builds. If you start with small, achievable steps, the confidence grows.
